Georgia Hall holds nerve in back-nine shoot-out to win first major

Ko gets some advice from her caddy

Hall usually has her boyfriend, Harry Tyrrell, on her bag, but she made a decision to replace him with her father at Royal Lytham, and the move paid off as she claimed a memorable two-shot win and the title of Women's British Open champion.

The large lead allowed Hall to enjoy the rousing reception that she received on her victory march up to the final hole, where a three-putt bogey was academic.

After tapping in for a bogey - her first of the day - at No. 18 that secured a two-shot victory over Pornanong (70), Hall hugged her playing partner from Thailand before being lifted off her feet by her caddie, father Wayne.

Georgia was born during the 1996 Masters won by English golfer Nick Faldo at Augusta, Georgia.

Hisako Higuchi, victor of the LPGA Championship in 1977, remains the only Japanese player to win a major championship on either the PGA or LPGA Tours.

The 22-year-old, from Bournemouth, is just the fifth British victor of a major and only the third home victor of this event since it achieved that status in 2001, following in the footsteps of Karen Stupples (2004) and Catriona Matthew (2009).

"When I was nine years old I used to say "this for the British Open" and to have that experience today was just unbelievable".

She went into the final round at Royal Lytham trailing Pornanong Phatlum by a shot and did not hit the front until the 16th hole, eventually going on to win the tournament by two shots.

Phatlum's advantage grew by a shot as she sunk a collection of fine putts for three birdies in a row, but Hall matched up to make two birdies of her own and stay in contention.

Hall missed the cut in the 2016 Women's British Open, but she responded superbly with four consecutive top-seven finishes on the Ladies European Tour, but it was her 2017 campaign in which she became a prominent figure on the world stage.

The final round quickly turned into a head-to-head duel between Hall and overnight lead Phatlum, after South Korean Ryu So-yeon triple-bogeyed the third hole.

"I played in the Solheim Cup (Europe v the USA) and loved it".

Phatlum shot a final-round 70 but was no match for Hall down the stretch. "I was so happy". "It was my goal when I was nine to win the British Open". The Thai finished runner up for the fifth time in her career, which is also her career best in a major championship.

"I was very confident going into this event from past year (she finished 3rd then)". Her previous best had been in a tie for 3rd in 2015.

Lee slumped to a 10th place finish.

He closed with a 3-under 69 for a three-stroke victory in the PGA Tour Champions event that is being replaced by the PGA Tour's 3M Open.

Playing in the final group with Rory McIlroy, the 25-year-old Thomas never let anyone closer than two shots of the lead.

World No. 1 Dustin Johnson shot 64 and for third on 10-under par.
