NCAA adopts college basketball reforms for NBA draft, agents, more

What the new NCAA rules mean for college basketball

The NCAA announced a series of policy changes regarding their rules for student athletes on Wednesday following the ongoing FBI Investigation into several prominent college basketball programs. While that may seem like a big deal on its face, the fact that it's.

Regarding the NBA Draft, college players who have requested an Undergraduate Advisory Committee evaluation, go through the draft but are not taken can return to school as long as they notify the school's athletic director of their intent by 5 p.m. the Monday after the draft. The agent's work would stop if the player enrolls in or returns to college.

Agents can pay for meals and transportation for players and their families if the expenses are related to the agent selection process. Previously, players could declare for the draft, and attend the NBA Scouting Combine, but had to withdraw their name from the draft no more than 10 days after the combine to retain eligibility. The latter would become effective if the NBA and its players' association allow high school students to enter the draft. This new rule aims to help highly touted high school players "make informed decisions about going pro". For instance, student-athletes can make up to five official visits during their junior year of high school and another five visits during their senior year. The NCAA is establishing a fund to assist schools in this endeavor.

University of Kentucky coach John Calipari, talking about the NCAA rules changes on SportsCenter, said "None of this goes into effect until the NBA and the Players Association come up with something, and I'm hearing it won't be until 2022 so we're probably wasting our breath dealing with the ins and outs of this".

One other notable change specifies the appointment of two independent groups to oversee the investigation of cases defined as "complex". There will also be longer postseason bans, head coach suspensions and increased recruiting restrictions for college coaches who break the rules.
