Sen. Rand Paul Invites Russian MPs to Washington

United States senator Rand Paul called for increased dialogue with Moscow and invited a delegation of Russian lawmakers to Washington DC during the Republican's visit to the Russian capital on Monday.

The chairman of the Russian worldwide relations committee, Konstantin Kosachev, thanked Paul and said he hoped the meetings could happen before the end of the year. "Nevertheless, your position in favor of developing dialogue that equally meets the interests of the United States and Russian Federation cannot but inspire respect", Kosachev said. "I invited the to send a delegation to the Capitol, and they have agreed to take this important next step", Mr. Paul said in a statement.

Paul was expected to meet Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov during his visit. He's also the individual that fellow Republicans met with during their recent trip to Moscow on July 4 of this year.

Both Republican and Democratic lawmakers back in Washington quickly pointed out in tweets and formal statements that Russian Federation is not a friend of the US and that the president should not accept Putin's word as bond on matters of USA national security.

The Kentucky Republican and 2016 presidential hopeful flew to Moscow this week to lead a legislative delegation in support of President Donald Trump's diplomatic outreach to Russian President Vladimir Putin. "We will continue our conversation with our American counterparts tomorrow on these and other most likely regional issues of the worldwide agenda", Slutsky said, according to Russian state media.

Background: A group of USA lawmakers led by Sen. "Certainly it will not happen during the ongoing election campaign either", he said.

Paul suggested he did not believe raising the issue of election interference would have been productive in his meetings with Russian officials.

Trump endured days of intense bipartisan criticism for his performance at a joint press conference, where he cited Putin's "powerful" denials of Russian interference.

Putin said he would be happy to meet Trump in Washington or Moscow, but the White House has since said the meeting will be postponed to 2019.
