Saudi-led coalition claims deadly Yemen attack

Dozens of people, many of them school children, have been killed or wounded in a Saudi-led coalition air strike in rebel-held northern Yemen, medics say.

The Saudi-led coalition is fighting to defeat Houthi rebels who expelled the Yemeni government from the capital and took control of vast swathes of the country. Turki al-Malki said the attack was "a legitimate military action, conducted in conformity with global humanitarian law".

The International Committee of the Red Cross in Yemen told ABC News that nearby hospitals received dozens of dead bodies and wounded bystanders.

A spokesman for the Red Cross in Sanaa told AFP the toll was not final as casualties from the attack were taken to several hospitals.

The buses were targeted as they were passing through Dahyan market in the rebel-held province of Saada, according to the Houthi-run Al-Masirah TV. The attack happened while the bus was stationary. In a statement, Save the Children condemned the attacks and called for a "full, immediate and independent investigation into this and other recent attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, including schools and hospitals".

The United Nations has repeatedly criticized the actions of the coalition.

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), an outspoken critic of the United States' support for the Saudi coalition, expressed fury over the attack and demanded once again that lawmakers end their complicity in the war. The military action in Saada province, which lies between Amran and Saudi Arabia, was in line with worldwide humanitarian law, he said.

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the USA was "concerned" by reports of an attack resulting in civilian deaths.

The Al Saud regime along with some of its allies, particularly the UAE, has been waging a deadly war against impoverished Yemen since March 2015 in an attempt to reinstall fugitive former president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi and crush the popular Ansarullah movement.

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said "civilians continue to pay the highest price after three years of war in Yemen, thousands of them have been killed, injured or maimed".

Houthi media broadcast graphic footage appearing to show the bodies of children.

It's not the first time the coalition has hit a residential area this month. "Causalities from today's attack continue to arrive", the Red Cross stated on August 9.

He accused the rebels of using children as "tools and covers for their terrorist acts".

The coalition's spokesperson said the operation sought to target the militants responsible for a missile intercepted over Saudi civilian territory on Wednesday.

The missile was sacked from the rebel-held Yemeni province of Amran towards the Saudi city of Jizan, the coalition said.

In May, the Trump administration imposed sanctions on five Iranians linked with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) who allegedly provided ballistic missile support to the Houthi rebels in Yemen which they then used to attack Saudi Arabia.
