Nadal ends Tsitsipas’ Toronto run on Greek’s 20th birthday

Rafael Nadal in action against Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece in the Rogers Cup final on Sunday

Tsitsipas beat the fourth-seeded Anderson after topping seventh-seeded Dominic Thiem, ninth-seeded Novak Djokovic and second-seeded defending champion Alexander Zverev.

Nadal overcame a late service break and fought off a set point at Aviva Centre.

He double-faulted on his first match point at 6-4, mistakenly thinking it was 5-3.

"I'm capable of doing anything on the court and beating any opponent", Tsitsipas said.

Nadal doesn't know what's next for him as the Cincinnati Masters remains an option, but he is in an ideal position as he takes his hard-court success into the U.S. Open.

Tsitsipas did well to serve out at love in the first game but Nadal took over as he broke back in each of his next two chances before sealing the opening set in 34 minutes when the world number 27 sent a routine forehand into the net.

He said he stayed positive in the tiebreaker, knowing one or two points can make the difference, and reflected on how significant an achievement it is to make the final of a Masters event at such a young age.

Rafael Nadal shared a brilliant moment with a young fan that left him cracking up before the Rogers Cup final. I get nervous and I miss it.

He had been expected to face a field featuring all of the world's top 10 but world No 1 Rafael Nadal confirmed last night that he would be pulling out of the competition, citing his need to rest before the final Grand Slam of the year. The Greek youngster, who turned 20 on Sunday, appeared flummoxed at times and never really found his rhythm.

Nadal, 32, earned US$1.02 million with the victory. The Spaniard also became the fourth player in the Open Era to win 80 titles and is now behind the likes of Ivan Lendll, Roger Federer, and Jimmy Connors. It's expected to be the last competitive appearance for the 45-year-old Toronto player.
