Soul Music Legend Aretha Franklin Is Reportedly Near Death

Source Singer Aretha Franklin Seriously Ill

Shock and concern have spread around the music world overnight following reports that soul singing great Aretha Franklin is "gravely ill".

While he didn't divulge too many details about the situation, Showbiz 411 founder Roger Friedman wrote on Sunday evening that Franklin, 76, is now surrounded by family and other loved ones, who have asked for prayers and privacy for the legendary singer. Her loved ones are asking for "prayers and privacy" during this hard time.

Back in March the musician was forced to cancel some concerts, including a show in New Orleans, under "doctor's orders".

However, while she admitted in 2011 that she had gone "through a number of procedures", Franklin told Access Hollywood that "I don't know where "pancreatic cancer" [reports] came from".

Her most recent performance was on November 2, 2017 for the Elton John AIDS Foundation in NY.

The singer was forced to cancel two live shows in March on doctor's orders, with her last live performance coming at the Elton John AIDS Foundation in NY last November.

Her brother and manager Cecil died from lung cancer in 1989, one year after her sister Carolyn passed away from breast cancer.

While social media users chimed in with prayers and wishes for Franklin's recovery following the reports of her illness, others wondered if these reports were similar to the ones from November 2017 that falsely claimed she had passed away.

She has also won 20 Grammy awards, including three special honours: the Legend Award (1991), the Lifetime Achievement Award (1994) and the MusiCares Person of the Year (2008).

Her statement came after she cancelled a series of shows due to ill health.

Last February she announced that 2017 would be her past year "in concert", BET reveals.

Over the course of her five-decade career, Aretha has earned 18 Grammy awards and sold over 75 million records.
