Tiger Woods show suggests bright future for champion Brooks Koepka

Tiger prowling for first major title in decade after Koepka falters

A devastated Adam Scott says he will approach the majors with renewed vigour after capping a lean two years with a valiant display at the US PGA Championship. "I didn't know how many tournaments I would play this year or if I would even play".

The US qualifying process ended Sunday with Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson, Rickie Fowler and Webb Simpson taking the final four available spots, a list unchanged from the points leaders entering the week.

"I'm playing some good golf".

But 2013 Masters victor Scott's charge fizzled when he missed a short birdie putt at the 17th, which would have cut Koepka's lead to just one.

He yanked his tee shots at the eighth and ninth holes further left than Bernie Sanders but enjoyed a couple of excellent pieces of luck, finding his ball with a clear route to the hole. "And I'm just very pleased at what I've done so far ... going from where I've come from, to now over the past year, it's been pretty cool".

"It really hurt that I missed that [birdy shot at the 17th], just not to make it interesting up the last", Scott said.

Woods, meanwhile, shot a 6-under-par 64 to finish in second, posting his second consecutive top-10 in a major after tying for sixth last month at The Open. I would have laughed at you and told you there was no way, no chance, and to do it is really incredible.

But for all the buzz Woods generated on Saturday, the reality is that capturing a 15th major from four shots back of the front-running Brooks Koepka will require something special.

Spurs open campaign with win over Newcastle
Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino was full of praise for Harry Kane even though he failed to get on the scoresheet in a 2-1 win at Newcastle United .

It was a marathon day of golf for Woods who was one of 77 players pulling double duty to complete his rain-interrupted second round while putting his surgically repaired back to the test. Obviously, I had to get it going, so to birdie seven, eight and nine was kind of a big momentum shift for me.

"I never would've foreseen that two years ago", Woods said.

"I'm very disappointed obviously because I had a great chance", said Lowry, who hit a three wood into the hazard at the par-five 17th to drop another crucial shot.

"I missed putts on 14 and 15 and Brooks didn't and my momentum was gone", Scott said. He joined Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan and Gene Sarazen as the only players to win the two USA majors that rotate to different courses in the same year.

Eight others, including 2013 Masters champion Scott, have claimed a single major title and the 38-year-old was doubly inspired by fellow Australian pro Jarrod Lyle, who died aged 36 of cancer the day before the tournament started.

"It's definitely moving in the right direction; I don't think it will be rocket science for (me) to figure out what's missing, if anything".

It will be impossible to overlook him now, not with the Wanamaker Trophy to go with his back-to-back U.S. Open titles. I'd just keep doing what he's doing because he's showing up at the right moments in the biggest events.

On the European side, qualifying runs for another three weeks before captain Thomas Bjorn makes his four picks in September. "I played 29 holes in the heat".
