Highway bridge collapses in Genoa in northern Italy

Reports suggested the bridge had also fallen on several properties

Multiple vehicles and "dozens of dead" were reported to be in the rubble, according to Reuters.

Italy's Ambulance Service have said there are "dozens of dead" as a result of the collapse.

A rescue mission was underway, though Italian officials didn't immediately confirm any casualties.

Photographs from the scene show rubble on the ground underneath the bridge and a number of buildings underneath it.

Other images showed a green truck that had stopped on the bridge just yards short of the gaping hole in the road surface.

Tedeschi said the part of the bridge that collapsed was about 80 meters in length.

Image and videos posted to Twitter after the collapse show a large portion of the bridge missing.

The vehicles plunged 79m (260ft) from the bridge into an industrial area below.

The collapse is shaping up to be a "huge tragedy", Infrastructure and Transport Minister Danilo Toninelli says. We are in close contact with Autostrade (company managing Italian highways) and we are going to the the site with the deputy Minister Rixi.

Italy's Autostrade, a motorway operator controlled by Atlantia, said it had been carrying out maintenance work on the flyover bridge that collapsed in Genoa on Tuesday.
