Armed police raced to Westminster after a auto crashed into the security barriers at the Houses of Parliament.

Police have also arrested the male driver, though no further details were provided.

Last week, a Muslim convert admitted plotting to kill more than 100 people by driving a truck into pedestrians on London's Oxford Street, the capital's major shopping thoroughfare.

Journalists in the area say the crash "looked intentional" and that the auto was driven into the security barrier "at speed".

She said: "I was walking on the other side [of the road]. I turned around and I saw a silver vehicle driving very fast close to the railings, maybe even on the pavement", she said.

Westminster Underground station, close to parliament, was closed and the building cordoned off.

The vehicle involved, a small silver hatchback, could be seen smashed into a security barrier at a vehicle security checkpoint in the parliament perimeter fence. Masood then stabbed an unarmed police officer.

In 2017, 52-year-old Briton Khalid Masood rammed his vehicle into pedestrians on the pavement along the south side of the Westminster Bridge, injuring more than 50 people and killing five.
