Aussie senator's 'final solution' speech backed by party leader as 'solid gold'

Fraser Anning and Bob Katter

QUEENSLAND crossbench senator Fraser Anning has laid out a radical immigration agenda condemned as racist, calling for a "final solution" plebiscite on which migrants come to Australia.

Fanning fears of Muslim immigrants "stealing jobs" and "sympathizing with Islamic State [IS, formerly ISIS]", Anning offered: "The final solution to the immigration problem is, of course, a popular vote".

He also said Australia should return to the predominately European immigration policy of the pre-Whitlam consensus and made horrific claims about Muslim Australians. Claiming that Muslim Australians are unable to integrate, he said adherents of Islam "do not work and live on welfare", and bring the threat of terrorism.

"We do not want people coming in from the Middle East or North Africa unless they're the persecuted minorities".

Anning's comments were condemned by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull who emphasised Australia was one of the most successful multicultural societies in the world.

The words "final solution" usually refer to the Nazi policy of extermination carried out against the Jews during the Holocaust.

Anning's comments had "nothing to do with me", Hanson said, distancing herself from the senator, who is a former member of the One Nation Party.

"The thought police have jumped on it", he said.

The Katter's Australian Party Senator also used the words "final solution" - a Nazi Germany term associated with the murder of Jewish people. Following the win, a confident Faruqi told BBC that she would use her role to push for a "positive future for Australia where we are stronger for our diversity".

"I'm a Muslim migrant, I'm about to be a Senator and there's not a damn thing Fraser Anning can do about it", she wrote in a piece for website Junkee on Wednesday.

Trump revokes security clearance of former Central Intelligence Agency director and frequent critic
Mr Brennan, who served as Central Intelligence Agency director between 2013 and 2017, has become an outspoken Trump critic. On Tuesday, Brennan responded on Twitter to a tweet Trump posted calling former aide Omarosa Manigault Newman a "dog".

The outrage over Anning's comments follows fury earlier this month after broadcaster Sky News aired an interview with far-right agitator Blair Cottrell, who once called for a portrait of Adolf Hitler to be hung "in every (Australian) classroom and every school".

"It was never meant to denigrade the Jewish community", he said.

But Mr Anning was unmoved and his party leader Bob Katter called the speech "magnificent" and "solid gold".

"I support everything he said", Katter told reporters on Wednesday afternoon.

"I call on Fraser Anning not only to apologise, but also to go and visit a Holocaust museum, and to hear first-hand from the survivors how the pain is still raw, and to see the devastation and destruction caused by the Nazi war machine". Derryn Hinch, a fellow member of the opposition, called it "Pauline Hanson on steroids".

Senator Anning has denied the link between his use of the term and its historical context, saying he "didn't even think" about whether it would be offensive.

He later told the Senate he deeply regretted shaking Mr Anning's hand after he gave the speech last night.

Labor MP Anne Aly, who is a Muslim, broke down as she spoke during a motion supporting Australia's non-discriminatory immigration policy.

One Nation leader Hanson said she was "appalled" by Anning's speech.
