Trump’s Military Parade Now Estimated to Cost $92 Million, Report Says

Marchers carry an American flag during New York City's 2017 Veterans Day parade

Manning says the Pentagon had "originally targeted November 10, 2018", for the Washington event, intended "to honor America's military veterans and commemorate the centennial of World War I".

Provisional figures released earlier on Thursday said the event could cost about $90 million (£71m) - more than three times an original estimate.

CNBC reports that $50 million for the parade will come from the Pentagon, and the remaining $42 million will come from agency partners like the Department of Homeland Security.

Initially, the estimates were that the parade would cost about $12 million, but that number has grown almost eight-fold since.

In September, Trump met with French President Emmanuel Macron and recalled how much he enjoyed watching the parade. Earlier this year, Trump bragged about saving costs by suspending joint military exercises with South Korea, which cost just $14 million.

He initially suggested a Fourth of July parade, but in March a memo from the Office of the Secretary of Defense suggested it would be integrated with the existing D.C. Veterans Day parade.

Russian Federation says dollar's days numbered as global trade currency
He added Turkey wants to develop relations with the European Union , and that the country is "a part of the family". Ankara was also ready for such a move in trade with the European Union, he added.

But a USA official told AFP earlier Thursday the planning estimate had now gone as high as US$92 million, though no final figure has been reached.

The official also noted that while the size and scope of the military parade can still shift, the plans now include approximately eight tanks, as well as other armored vehicles, including Bradleys, Strykers and M113s. It also was expected to involve a number of military aircraft flyovers. "Any cost estimates are pre-decisional". The Pentagon encouraged the use of wheeled vehicles only, and no tanks to "minimize damage to local infrastructure".

U.S. media were quick to highlight how the ballooning costs of the proposed parade stood in contrast to his concern about the expense of conducting joint military exercises with South Korea.

The Pentagon said the parade was planned to travel from the White House to the Capitol, and would feature a "heavy air component at the end".

The U.S. has not held a major military parade in Washington since 1991 to mark the end of Operation Desert Storm.

"The American Legion appreciates that our President wants to show in a dramatic fashion our nation's support for our troops", the statement said. "I mean, we're going to be showing our military".
