Matt Smith cast in Star Wars: Episode IX

Matt Smith is headed to the Star Wars universe! The former star of Doctor Who and the Netflix period drama The Crown also joins newcomers Keri Russell (The Americans), Richard E. Grant, Dominic Monaghan (Lost), and Naomi Ackie, who also appeared in Doctor Who as a supporting character in a 2015 episode.

Filming is already underway, with production set to be just outside of London as John Boyega and Chewy have both been spotted on set. That's to be expected, as co-writer and director J.J.

JJ Abrams is at the head of the project, having directed The Force Awakens. Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) will no doubt get his due as well, but let's be honest-the crux of this new trilogy is the dynamic between Rey and Kylo Ren, and that's going to be the beating heart of Episode IX as their story comes to a close. The actor had his breakout role in the long-running British sci-fi show Doctor Who, in which he played the eleventh incarnation of the titular Time Lord for three seasons. But Smith's a great actor, so he's no doubt capable of playing whatever Abrams has put in front of him.

'With the support and blessing from her daughter, Billie, we have found a way to honor Carrie's legacy and role as Leia in Episode IX by using unseen footage we shot together in Episode VII'.
