STD Rates Continue to Climb in US

The federal health agency said in a report released Tuesday that the numbers reflect a “steep sustained increase” in STDs since 2013

"We are sliding backward", Jonathan Mermin, the CDC's director for HIV/AIDS, Viral, STD and TB Prevention, said.

Since 2013, syphilis cases have risen 76 percent to 30,644, while gonorrhea diagnoses have increased 67 percent to 555,608.

The National Coalition of STD Directors is asking the government to authorize emergency access to public health funding so they can combat the crisis.

However, cases of other STDs have decreased over the last decade, including cases of HIV, which have dropped from 2,415 in 2006 to 991 in 2016, a almost 240 percent decrease.

The CDC also reported that the threat of untreatable gonorrhea continues in the United States. 45 percent of those cases involved females from 15-24.

"We expect gonorrhea will eventually wear down our last highly effective antibiotic, and additional treatment options are urgently needed", Gail Bolan, director of CDC's Division of STD Prevention, said.

"If we're not teaching people how to keep themselves safe from sexually transmitted infections early, then we start to see these surges and increases in those rates", Rauch said.

US Senator John McCain to lie in state in Arizona today
Early Monday morning, the flag atop the White House was raised after an unusually brief time at half-staff in McCain's honor. He said in a statement that this week was a time to honor McCain's "remarkable life" and pay respects to his family.

These STDs are curable with antibiotics, yet most cases go undiagnosed and untreated, according to the CDC.

"Commitment" usually means "money", and state and local health officials spoke candidly about the country's "eroding public health infrastructure" that they felt contributed to the tremendous increase in STDs.

"The explosion in STDs comes on the heels of years of cutbacks in federal funding", Harvey said.

"Doctors are not screening and testing for STDs, and patients don't know they need to ask for that screening and treatment", he said at the briefing.

The threat of untreatable gonorrhea persists in the United States, and reports of antibiotic resistant gonorrhea overseas have only reinforced those concerns.

It began recommending healthcare providers prescribe a single shot of ceftriaxone along with an oral dose of azithromycin - a prescription medication used to treat bacterial infections - to treat gonorrhea in 2015, in order to help delay the development of resistance to ceftriaxone.
