"Pressley, who became the first woman of color ever elected to the Boston City Council in 2009, has launched her own insurgent primary challenge in MA, taking on longtime Rep. Michael Capuano in the state's 7th Congressional District", Nik DeCosta-Klipa wrote.
Rep. Michael Capuano (D-Mass.) conceded to Pressley on Tuesday evening.
A part of the wave of women of color breaking into traditionally white positions of power across the country, Pressley's win echoed that of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's over the longtime representative Joe Crowley in NY, and the ascent of Stacey Abrams in Georgia, who - if she wins - will become the first African American female governor in United States history.
During the race, Capuano raised $1.73m to Pressley's $890,000, actively campaigning against her and even cancelling his vacation as soon as he heard she was running.
There is no Republican challenger in the November general election. Parallels between Pressley and Ocasio-Cortez were quickly observed as Pressley went up against a Democratic incumbent who was first elected into office in 1998.
She was endorsed by fellow congressional upstart Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who knocked off veteran Rep. Joe Crowley of NY in June.
Nike Announces New Ad Campaign Featuring Colin Kaepernick
Kaepernick has not been on an National Football League roster since he parted ways with the 49ers at the end of the 2016 season. The protests during the national anthem, soon embraced by other players too, raised the ire of some NFL fans and U.S.
"Our president is a racist, misogynistic, truly empathy-bankrupt man", Pressley, 44, told supporters on Tuesday night.
Ayanna Pressley applauds in front of her supporters during primary day on September 4, 2018 in Chelsea, Massachusetts.
Pressley has bristled at the notion that race was a defining issue in her campaign.
"I have been really furious about the constant charges being lobbed against me about identity politics that, by the way, are only lobbed against women and candidates of color", she said in one debate. Pressley's positions are also very progressive. Her opponent seemed to have the money and the loyalty of a popular incumbent.
Polls and political analysts predict the state's nine House of Representatives seats will remain in Democratic hands, along with the seat held by U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, a leading liberal voice often cited as a possible 2020 White House contender.
The last time an incumbent Democratic House member lost a primary was in 2014, when Seth Moulton defeated former Rep. John Tierney, who brought significant personal baggage to the campaign. The race focused less on substantive policy differences and more on whether voters wanted a change in the district.
