A year in, Uber CEO works to rebuild company’s reputation

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi speaks during the company's unveiling of the new features in New York Wednesday Sept. 5 2018. Uber is aiming to boost driver and passenger safety in an effort to rebuild trust in the brand

While addressing long-standing concerns among users and possibly helping to recruit drivers, the safety features also show that the Silicon Valley company is just as competitive as ever.

The blog post indicated that this Safety ToolKit, as well as the company's panic button, will expand to all drivers across the U.S. and Canada. That will never happen, they said, when riders and drivers can connect to rescuers directly with Global Positioning System.

Uber Technologies Inc [UBER.UL] Chief Executive Dara Khosrowshahi said on Wednesday the ride-hailing company was on track to launch an initial public offering next year and had no plans to sell its self-driving vehicle research arm. Another feature which is hands-free will give access to pick up passengers without touching their phones and they will not be able to see data details about where they retrieved passengers in the past.

Going forward, Uber will hide specific pickup and drop-off addresses in the driver's trip history so that only the general area where a trip has started and ended will show up on the driver's app, not the address.

In April, Uber announced it was launching a pilot program that would obscure the exact pickup and drop-off locations of a user's trip history, instead showing drivers a wider scope.

Trump calls on Times to reveal 'coward' behind critical op-ed
When asked if she wrote it, United Nations envoy Nikki Haley responded with a curt "no" on her way to a Security Council meeting. The decision was in the purview of James Bennet, editorial page editor, and James Dao, op-ed editor, with publisher A.G.

The in-built feature of calling 9-11 was available previously this year to only riders but now it is available for drivers too.

Uber will either send a text message, or verify their identity through third-party apps like Google Authenticator, Authy or Duo by going to Uber's account settings and selecting a method.

Uber says it's an extension of the GPS system that tracks riders and drivers within the app - only now, it will be leveraged to detect possible crashes and anomalies such as unusually long waits. The app is also getting better in terms of security of riders.

Despite the scandals, Uber's ridership is growing, although it is struggling to make money ahead of Khosrowshahi's planned public stock offering sometime next year.

The company wants to use all the information they're collecting on their customers to keep them safe, said Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi.
