Microsoft gives longer grace period for Windows 10 updates

All now supported feature updates of Windows 10 Enterprise and Education editions will be supported for 30 months from their original release date, giving customers more time for change management as they move to a faster update cycle.

The new policy builds on and extends the commitments made in February this year. The Extended Security Updates (ESU) program will allow those running Windows 7 Professional or Windows 7 Enterprise (under volume licensing) to pay for continued access to patches.

Microsoft's release cadence for Windows 10 has been the stuff of nightmares for IT pros.

Today's announcement adds an extra six months of support, with all now supported Windows 10 versions (1607 through 1803) supported for 30 months from their original release date.

The change follows an open letter to Microsoft from sysadmins, who said keeping up with the twice-yearly feature updates to Windows 10 was causing them "fatigue".

Enterprise customers clinging to their Windows 7 installations will be able to get security updates for three years longer, until January 2023, thanks to Microsoft changing its mind on pulling the plug on support for the heritage operating system.

All now supported feature updates of Windows 10 Enterprise and Education editions (versions 1607, 1703, 1709, and 1803) will be supported for 30 months from their original release date offering more time for change management as enterprises move to a faster update cycle. According to Microsoft, all future updates with a targeted release for the month of September will be supported for 30 months. You may see many of these features in the final cut, but Microsoft may tweak some features with the final release. If some user faces any problem, he/she can file a ticket via Microsoft FastTrack service.

A service called Windows 7 ESU (Extended Security Updates, enhanced security updates) will require payment for each device, and the price will rise every year.

The tech giant started releasing updates to Windows 10 and Office 365 ProPlus from April 2017, and set a semi-annual schedule for it. It will also continue to be supported on Windows Server 2016 until October 2025.
