Hurricanes Isaac and Florence continue to pose problems for Caribbean countries

Hurricanes Isaac and Florence continue to pose problems for Caribbean countries

At 11 p.m. EDT, the storm's center was located about 465 miles (750 kilometers) south-southeast of Bermuda and about 1,085 miles (1745 kilometers) east-southeast of Cape Fear, North Carolina.

"Weakening is forecast to begin by the middle of the week as Isaac approaches the Lesser Antilles", the NHC said, urging residents in the Windward Islands - Dominica, Grenada, St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines - to pay particular attention to the storm.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said Helene has maximum sustained winds of 110 miles per hour; however, it's expected to gradually weaken into Tuesday evening and is forecast to become a tropical storm by Thursday. Its center will move between Bermuda and the Bahamas Tuesday and Wednesday, and approach the coast of SC or North Carolina on Thursday, the National Hurricane Center said.

President Donald Trump says the safety of the American people is his "absolute highest priority" as Hurricane Florence takes aim at portions of the East Coast.

Since the hurricane has already amassed wind speeds of 130 miles per hour, the coast could see life-threatening wind, rain, and storm surges.

The storm's first effects were already being seen on barrier islands as risky rip currents hit beaches and seawater flowed over a state highway.

Hurricane Helene will likely continue to strengthen since it is in a low wind shear environment and warm waters.

Sustained winds have reached nearly 105 miles per hour.

But the season is just now peaking, and Hurricanes Florence, Isaac, and Helene are a stark reminder that we are not out of the woods yet.

Currently, three hurricanes with divergent paths are churning through the Atlantic, and most urgently, forecasters are sounding the alarm about Florence.

Hurricane Helene is strengthening rapidly as it moves across the tropical Atlantic. "Whether it is a tropical storm, a tropical storm watch, or a hurricane watch or a hurricane warning, we must treat all of them the same way".

"A hurricane is coming our way", McMaster said Sunday at a news conference held at the State Emergency Operations Center.

Immediately to the north of Virginia, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan said his state was also was "preparing for the potential of historic, catastrophic and life-threatening flooding". Florence is heading towards Virginia and the Carolinas, where a state of emergency has been declared, and Helene appears to be heading north, well away from land.

Should Hurricane Isaac begin to grow, islands beyond the Lesser Antilles such as Puerto Rico, Haiti and the Dominican Republic will brace themselves for the possibility of weathering another storm.

This week is the expected peak of hurricane season, according to forecasters, so seeing these active storms churning through the Atlantic right now isn't fully unexpected. The Category 4 storm destroyed 15,000 buildings and killed 19 people in North Carolina.
