Trump’s visit to Ireland postponed due to ‘scheduling reasons’

Last month, the US President announced his intention to visit - taking the Government here by surprise.

He told Irish radio station RTE on September 2: "There is an open invitation to the US President to visit Ireland at any time".

Earlier this month, the White House announced Trump would travel to Ireland as part of a trip including a November 11 event in Paris marking the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. Washington had said that Trump would visit Ireland "to renew the deep and historic ties between our two nations".

Donald Trump was due to go to Ireland for November 12 as a stopover on his way back to America after visiting France for the World War I service.

The President was due to visit his golf course in Doonbeg, County Clare, and Dublin on the weekend of 10-11 November. It said USA officials had "cited scheduling reasons". "As details are confirmed we will let you know".

CBS' Les Moonves steps down after sexual misconduct allegations
National Amusements will appoint six new independent directors to the CBS board, including former Time Warner CEO Richard Parsons. Under Moonves, CBS also made strides in comedy with "Everybody Loves Raymond", "Two and a Half Men" and "The Big Bang Theory".

The cancellation was first reported this afternoon by Independent.ie, the website of the Irish Independent and associated titles.

Confusing matters, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders claimed in a statement shortly afterward that the administration was still "finalizing" whether Ireland will be a stop on a previously announced trip to Europe.

Mr Varadkar said there is a standing invitation for any United States president to come to Ireland and many have in the past.

The tweet included a photo whose caption said "the invitation to Trump is unnecessary, unwelcome & unwise".

The Labour Party, Green Party and Solidarity-People Before Profit pledged to organise protests surrounding the visit. We will always be firm friends of the American people, but Ireland will not welcome a man with Trump's record of discrimination, sexism and lies. That summit, in Helsinki, led to widespread criticism that Trump was deferential to Putin and did not challenge him about Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election.
