5 dead in Bakersfield, California shooting rampage

Crime scene

"The suspect, the husband, shot the person at the trucking company and then turned and shot his wife" and then chased and shot another man who showed up, Youngblood said.

Kern County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene following reports of shots being fired at a trucking company on Manwell Boulevard, near Highway 58 and Weedpatch Highway, Bakersfieldnow.com reported.

Authorities said the suspect then went to a residence on Breckenridge where he shot and killed two more people.

A sheriff's deputy then spotted the man driving and when he pulled the man over and confronted him he shot himself in the chest, local media say.

According to police, the shooter killed himself when confronted by a deputy.

"Six people lost their lives in a very short period of time", he said.

The 45-day period is based on when interference is believed to have happened and not specifically tied to Election Day. Those backing the legislation say that under the bill, a nation would know exactly what it would face if caught.

Youngblood said detectives believe the gun store is not connected to the spree. The woman was riding with her child.

When asked if this was a mass shooting, the sheriff said "absolutely".

"Where we go from here is try to figure out why this started and why there are so many players involved in the connection, because obviously these are not random shootings", Youngblood said.

Bakersfield is a community of 375,000 people about 115 miles (185 km) northeast of Los Angeles. Youngblood did not disclose the identities of the victims.

A gunman has killed five people, including his wife, in a string of shootings in southern California. He then hijacked a auto but the woman and child inside the vehicle escaped. The three shootings all occurred at the trucking business near Bear Mountain Sports.

About 30 people witnessed the shootings and are being interviewed by deputies.
