Stewart, Storm surge past Mystics for third WNBA title

Washington Mystics’ Natasha Cloud moves past the Storm’s Sue Bird and toward the basket in the first half of Game 2 of the WNBA Finals in Seattle on Sunday

Wednesday's Game 3, while not at Key Arena in Seattle, was no different. The Storm were victorious 98-82 in a game that was decided in the second quarter.

Elena Delle Donne scored 23 points and Kristi Toliver scored 20 points for the Mystics. Things did not go well for Washington the rest of the way.

The Storm blew the game open during the second quarter and led by 16 points at half time.

The Storm shot 50 percent from both the field (36 of 72) and from 3-point range (13 of 26).

-Made Shots: For a team who relies too heavily on the three-ball, the Mystics have to convert and knock down shots. It's been a year of vulnerability and strength for the young star, and as she stood on the court clutching her trophy all she could do was smile and shrug.

Still, Mystics guard Natasha Cloud described her team's situation as "David and Goliath", as no team in WNBA history has come back to win the championship after trailing 2-0 in the Finals. Unfortunately for the home team, Seattle immediately responded with an 8-0 run and coasted the rest of the way.

A masked Sue Bird, the oldest player in the league, finished the game with 10 points and 10 assists.

Jerome Boateng reveals what he told Jose Mourinho during summer phone call
Pogba, 25, has thrown fresh doubt over his United career during the worldwide break by admitting he could leave the club in January .

"Whenever you go up 2-0, you understand that teams are going to be desperate", said Bird, who has won two WNBA championships, including in 2010 when Seattle swept Atlanta.

"I mean, Stewie and I joke, I don't know if I should even say this, but at the start of the season we lost to Phoenix at home, and we were like, oh, crap, what kind of year is this going to be, because it didn't - we hadn't clicked yet", Bird said. "Their experience showed in this playoff series".

After previously declining to discuss her left knee injury because she did not want to make excuses, the Deleware native opened up about how the ailment affected her play.

"Our team went through a rebuild, and yes, I chose to stay, and once we got Jewell and Stewie, we knew we would get on the other side, but how do you know you're going to get on the other side this fast".

The Mystics, on the other hand, didn't have a single player score in double figures, and only had two points off the bench.

"You're only going to impact [Delle Donne and Toliver] to a degree", Hughes said. She won four national championships with the Huskies, Olympic gold in 2016, and world championship gold in 2014 - all on teams coached by Geno Auriemma.

"I posted on the board for my team in training camp one of the preseason predictions that was out there", Thibault recalled. "I don't know if it was putting us seventh or eighth, I can't remember, and our team took a look at that and said, hell, no".
