Twitterati clap back at ‘sexist, racist’ Serena Williams’ sketch

WTA back Williams’ sexism claims

Umpire Carlos Ramos handed Serena Williams three code violations during play and she was fined $17,000 (£13,100).

Williams' claims of sexism were backed by the governing body of women's tennis, the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), whose chief executive said the umpire had shown the 36-year-old a different level of tolerance than if she had been a man.

"At the time, I did kind of think they were booing at me".

Some tennis umpires are upset over the "verbal abuse" that Carlos Ramos received from Williams, and the amount of attention he's gotten after the final.

An Australian newspaper defended its cartoonist on Tuesday after publishing a caricature of Serena Williams having a temper tantrum at the U.S. Open tennis tournament, which civil rights leaders, celebrities and fans condemned as racist.

The Japanese star said she tried to ignore the furore as it was unfolding around her because that was what she had been taught to do since she was a child. "She's passionate. She was speaking out and I think for Ramos, he was a little defensive at that point, and was fed up as opposed to saying, 'Okay, let's get back to business, '" Adams said.

She said, men "are badgering the umpire on the changeovers and nothing happens".

Space Station's view of Hurricane Florence looks eerily apocalyptic
This photo shows what it looks like deep inside the eye of Hurricane Florence, a place of relative calm for such storms. Once Florence makes landfall, it'll be the first major Atlantic hurricane of the 2018 season to hit the mainland US.

Ramos was in the chair at Flushing Meadows last Saturday when Naomi Osaka won her first Grand Slam title by beating 23-time major champion Williams 6-2, 6-4. But, he said, "We recognize that the officials we use from around the world are very good at what they do".

Mackie Shilstone, Williams' fitness coach for the past 10 years, said that Williams was correct in defending herself despite the outburst triggering waves of condemnation. She added that Ramos could have prevented the incident with clear communication.

To account for the longer game time, you could work out how many fines were issued per set.

The governing body's support for Ramos came after the WTA, which operates the women's tour, was critical of the way things went between him and Williams in NY.

"I've said far worse", McEnroe, a seven-times Grand Slam singles victor, said on ESPN.

Other umpires are reportedly not so cool with the outrageous smearing of Ramos. "She is going for her first Grand Slam title, grew up in NY, that was her moment", she added. "She was definitely playing better than Serena from the get-go, so this is hers and hers 100% no matter what was happening with the chaos". "I don't see it's necessary really to debate that".
