Hurricane Florence still a threat despite downgrade

With their entire neighborhood evacuated in Wilmington, North Carolina, David and Janelle Garrigus planned to ride out Florence at their daughter's one-bedroom apartment in Charlotte.

In the case of Hurricane Harvey past year, human-caused warming was found to have made the storm's record-breaking rainfall three times more likely and 15% more intense.

The "threat of freshwater flooding will increase over the next several days" in the impacted areas. "A turn to the west-northwest and west at an even slower forward speed is expected tonight and Friday, and a slow west-southwestward motion is forecast Friday night and Saturday".

The storm was moving west-northwest at 10 miles per hour with winds that have decreased significantly to 100 miles per hour. Similar declarations were made earlier in North and South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. The company also has deployed recovery teams to help after Florence makes landfall.

Florence is now expected to begin delivering tropical storm-force winds in the region by early Thursday, escalating to hurricane-force winds by late Thursday or early Friday.

"The first bands are upon us", Gov. Roy Cooper said Thursday evening. The axis of heaviest rain may shift further south or west, but the extreme rainfall is going to happen. "I've been through a lot of hurricanes down there and the worst thing about the Outer Banks is we don't have any drainage". The rainfall will cause prolonged significant river flooding. North Myrtle Beach could see a storm surge between 6 and 9 feet.

People in areas vulnerable to the unsafe hurricane, particularly those in coastal regions, have fled ahead of the storm.

Schools and businesses closed as far south as Georgia, airlines canceled about 1,200 flights and counting, and coastal towns in the Carolinas were largely emptied out.

Officials in the potential path of Florence urged people to evacuate their coastal homes and directed drivers away from the coast. By late Wednesday, the authorities in North Carolina reported almost 7,000 evacuees staying in 71 emergency shelters throughout the state.

About 5.25 million people live in areas under hurricane warnings or watches, and 4.9 million live in places covered by tropical storm warnings or watches, the National Weather Service said.

Hurricane Florence begins to batter USA east coast
The Miami-based center says Florence is bringing "catastrophic" fresh water flooding over a wide area of the Carolinas . Screaming winds bent trees and raindrops flew sideways as Florence's leading edge battered the Carolina coast Thursday.

Hurricane-force winds now extend up to 80 miles and tropical-storm-force winds extend up to 195 miles from the center of the storm. Storm surge is why many of you have been placed under evacuation and we are asking citizens to please heed a warning.

Boarding up his home in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Chris Pennington watched the forecasts and tried to decide when to leave.

Storm surge warnings and hurricane warnings are in effect for all of North Carolina and most of SC.

You may have heard about Hurricane Florence, the storm careering towards the USA east coast prompting warnings of an impending disaster. The surge will be compounded by destructive waves fueled by the hurricane's strong winds.

"Tropical storm conditions are expected to spread inland across the remainder of the warning area through Saturday", the NHC said.

"Get prepared on the East Coast", Gerst warned when Tweeting the photo.

By late Thursday afternoon, the Carolina coasts can expect winds topping 80 miles per hour.

Isaac will move past the eastern Caribbean islands by late Thursday.

Forecasters anxious the storm's damage will be all the worse if it lingers on the coast. He said Thursday he has activated 2,800 National Guard troops to respond to the storm.
