Hurricane Florence's onslaught threatens disaster in North Carolina

Lowe’s emergency command center in Wilkesboro North Carolina monitors the path of Hurricane Florence and a team at company headquarters in Mooresville is working around the clock to coordinate deliveries

Florence was expected to make landfall near Cape Fear, North Carolina, at midday, and forecasters said its size meant it could batter the U.S. East Coast with hurricane-force winds for almost a full day.

As of 11 p.m. EDT Wednesday, the storm was centered 260 miles (455 kilometers) east southeast of Wilmington, North Carolina, moving northwest at 17 mph (28 kph).

- SCEMD (@SCEMD) September 13, 2018The President reinforced this is a unsafe storm, and everyone in evacuation areas should follow the advice of Governor McMaster to evacuate while there is still time. Tens of thousands were without power.

"This rainfall will produce catastrophic flash flooding and prolonged significant river flooding", the NHC said.

Orlando International Airport officials are warning that Hurricane Florence could impact incoming and outgoing flights as early as Thursday.

Its storm surge and the prospect of 1 to 3½ feet of rain were considered a bigger threat than its winds, which dropped off from an alarming 140 miles per hour - Category 4 - earlier in the week. People were stuck in their cars, attics and rooftops, waiting for rescuers in boats.

Forecasters at the National Hurricane Centre said the storm would weaken after making landfall but also linger, dumping heavy rains for days.

He said he could see the sky and birds flying, a striking contrast to the powerful wind and rains that battered the area just half an hour before. The storm's slowing forward movement and heavy rains had Gov. Roy Cooper warning of an impending disaster. "Surviving this storm will be a test of endurance, teamwork, common sense and patience".

More than 370,000 people were without power in North Carolina early on Friday, state officials said.

About 1.7 million people in the Carolinas and Virginia were warned to evacuate, but it's unclear how many did, officials said.

Manure lagoons are about as pleasant as they sound-vast open-air ponds of manure located next to the many hog farms near the North Carolina coast.

Others turned to social media and held live prayer sessions asking God to cause Hurricane Florence to lose strength. It is moving to the northwest at 12 mph, which is 3 mph slower than what the hurricane center reported at 5 a.m.

It urged residents to heed evacuation orders. Flooding from rain and rising rivers also was reported in New Bern.

"We've planned for this".

"You can't get over till we have power and we have sewer up and running", said the retired teacher and real estate agent, who rode out the hurricane in an inland hotel. "But we are going to do everything we can".

"I'm anxious about what I might find when I go home, though", she said.

One resident, 67-year-old Linda Smith, told the MailOnline: "We're a little anxious about the storm surge so we came down to see what the river is doing now".

In a new demonstration of the network's CGI capabilities, hosts have presented from the centre of a digital storm surge to demonstrate the hurricane's damaging potential.

Florence, which is now a slow-moving Category 2 storm, is expected to linger over the Carolinas before turning north and sliding into western Virginia.

Life-threatening storm surges of up to 13 feet (4m) have been forecast in some areas when the monster storm eventually makes landfall in North and SC.

Once a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 225 km/h, the hurricane was downgraded to a Category 1 on Thursday night.

Florence's center may linger for another whole day along coastal North and SC - punishing homes with crushing winds and floods and endangering those who've stayed behind.

The hurricane was seen as a major test for the country's Federal Emergency Management Agency, which was heavily criticized as slow and unprepared for Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico previous year.
