Hurricane Florence moving towards coast of North, South Carolina: NHC

US East Coast braces for Hurricane Florence

While the reporter has faced scorn from some, for others it brought much needed comedic relief during the deadly storm, reports news.com.au.

The Wilmington Police Department confirmed on Twitter that a mother and infant were killed in the incident. North Carolina corrections officials said more than 3,000 people were relocated from adult prisons and juvenile centres in the path of Florence, and more than 300 county prisoners were transferred to state facilities.

"This is going to be a Mike Tyson punch to the Carolina coast", said Jeff Byard, associate administrator for response and recovery at the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

This is according to data from poweroutage.us, which tracks the USA's electrical power grid.

NHC stated at 8 a.m. EDT (1200 UTC), the center of the eye of Hurricane Florence was located by NOAA Doppler weather radars and surface observations to be just inland near latitude 34.1 degrees north and longitude 77.9 degrees west.

Steve Troxler, North Carolina's Agriculture Commissioner, says preparation is key to minimizing losses.

Hurricane and storm surge warnings and watches are now in effect up and down the coast of North Carolina and SC.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC)'s predictions of both "catastrophic" flooding and "life-threatening" storm surges has kicked emergency relief efforts into high gear.

The hurricane came ashore early on Friday, pounding the state with torrential rain and high winds.

The event invite says, "Samsung's newest Galaxy device is bringing more ways to express yourself than ever before ". It is easy to interpret the wording of the invite as a sign Samsung will release a device with four cameras.

But previous research has shown that the strongest hurricanes are getting wetter, more intense and intensifying faster due to human-caused warming.

By 1:50 pm (1750 GMT) the winds had dropped to 75 miles per hour (120 kph) and the center was moving west at a 6 miles per hour (10 kph), the NHC said, and parts of North and SC would get as much as 40 inches of rain (1 meter).

Tens of thousands of homes and businesses could be flooded in North Carolina alone, Governor Cooper said.

In Washington, North Carolina, the wind-swept Pamlico River has risen beyond its banks and is flooding entire neighborhoods.

SC ordered the mandatory evacuation of one million coastal residents while North Carolina ordered an evacuation of the Outer Banks, barrier islands that are a popular tourist destination.

Employees at New Bern's WCTI-TV NewsChannel 12 had to abandon their studio for the "first time in history", the station posted Thursday night on Facebook. "You may need to move up to the second story, or to your attic, but WE ARE COMING TO GET YOU".

And while the intensity of Florence's winds - still in the 90 miles per hour range - have diminished enough to turn it into a Category 1, the storm has grown in size as it crawls off the coast at a plodding 6 miles per hour.
