UK, EU plan special summit to sign Brexit deal

Stephen Crabb as part of his membership of the Brexit select committee met with the EU's chief negotiator Michel Barnier

The flurry of activity came after former foreign secretary Boris Johnson launched a fresh attack on the PM's Brexit plan, claiming it would be "substantially worse than the status quo" for British businesses.

He said it was "very welcome" that Bank of England Governor Mark Carney had agreed to delay his departure date from June 2019 to January 2020 to help navigate any Brexit-related economic bumps.

The figurehead for Britain's campaign to leave the EU, Johnson again urged the government to be confident over Brexit, saying the "direful predictions" for the economy before the 2016 referendum had not turned out to be true.

Boris Johnson has said that talkRADIO should read his Mail on Sunday column "to your readers" to "declaim it" after Mr Johnson received backlash for comparing Theresa May's Brexit strategy to a "suicide vest".

"Chequers is the only plan on the table which will deliver on the will of the British people while avoiding a hard border in Northern Ireland".

"We are working on a deal which will be good for United Kingdom industry and we are confident we're going to achieve that", a spokesman for May's government said.

He told ITV News: "I've been told that she will get a full appraisal of comments that were made over the dinner".

Hurricane Florence moving towards coast of North, South Carolina: NHC
In Washington, North Carolina, the wind-swept Pamlico River has risen beyond its banks and is flooding entire neighborhoods. Hurricane and storm surge warnings and watches are now in effect up and down the coast of North Carolina and SC .

"The treaty is clear, we have two years to reach an agreement before they leave... in March 2019".

May's spokesman said her proposal, known as "Chequers" for the country house where it was hashed out in July, is the only serious, credible and negotiable plan available. There is, so far, no full exit deal and it is uncertain whether May can push an agreement through the British parliament.

If a deal has been reached by then, it will need to be approved by MPs.

Andrea Jenkyns, who has submitted a letter of no confidence in May, told AFP the prime minister was "too dogmatic" to change course.

Mr Baker, a leading figure in the pro-Brexit Tory European Research Group, said the party's annual conference in Birmingham, starting on September 30, could prove a decisive moment as Mrs May is forced to acknowledge the scale of grassroots opposition to her proposals.

Under May's proposals, Britain will seek a free trade area for goods with the European Union, largely by accepting a "common rulebook" for goods and British participation in European Union agencies that provide authorisations for goods. "Under the first, Chequers will be parked until talks resume after Brexit day for a loosely-worded fudge on the future relationship instead. The second option is to abandon it altogether and return to a more basic Canada style free trade agreement - but only if the European Union gives way on its Irish border hardline". On Wednesday, the ERG will put forward its own plan for resolving the Irish border question.

"Brexit is a negative negotiation, unfortunately".
