Celtic Jabari Bird taking time off amid charges

Celtics shooting guard Jabari Bird has issued a statement following his arraignment at Brighton Municipal Court Thursday morning on domestic violence charges.

A report was handed down Thursday that Bird is stepping away from the team for "legal and medical issues" in the wake of the criminal charges against him for domestic violence.

Bird was taken to a local hospital for evaluation, and was being "guarded" by the police while there.

UPDATE (1:30 p.m. ET): Bird has been accused of felony charges of kidnapping, strangulation, domestic assault and battery and assault and battery with a unsafe weapon, according to The Athletic's Jared Weiss, who posted photos of the criminal complaint brought against Bird on Twitter.

Bird also released a statement on Thursday. CBS Boston reports that the judge set bail at $50,000 cash, which is due by 4 pm today.

Florence death toll rises to 5 amid massive deluge
Florence "will produce catastrophic flooding over parts of North and SC for some time", NOAA official Steve Goldstein said. Forecasters say prolonged rainfall from Florence could produce catastrophic flash flooding and significant river flooding.

Bird's lawyer, former federal prosecutor Brian Kelly, said his client "understands the seriousness of the allegations" but that there are two sides to the story.

The Celtics called the allegations disturbing and said the team's 'thoughts are with the victim'. When the alleged victim did leave the residence, Bird was described to be in "mental distress".

Bird attacked the victim over the course of several hours, prosecutors said, at times throwing her against a wall.

He is apologizing to his family, the Celtics, his teammates, fans and the National Basketball Association "for the unnecessary distraction that I have caused". "The information that has been released does not tell the full story". His girlfriend reportedly told police that, after she left his apartment, he texted her, saying he would kill himself if she did not return. Pursuant to Domestic Violence Policy in the NBA's labor agreement, matters of this kind are handled by the League Office, not the team, and so the Celtics will be working with both the league and local authorities to assist in their ongoing investigations. I do not condone violence against women. Drafted 56th overall by the Celtics in 2017, Bird signed a two-year, US$2.9 million (A$4m) deal in late July. Only the first year of the contract is guaranteed, and it could be voided, depending on how Bird's case plays out.
