Here's Our First, Sans-Makeup Look At Joaquin Phoenix As The Joker

Joaquin Phoenix'The Sisters Brothers' premiere Toronto International Film Festival Canada- 08 Sep 2018

Joker will re-imagine the world of Batman as an '80s crime film with a dark and gritty tone. Though his character Arthur Fleck is not yet donning the Joker's trademark makeup in the footage, the clown element of his arc is already foreshadowed via both the merry-go-round in the background and the red-nosed amusing man who confronts him. Sadly, no clown makeup has been applied, but like Phoenix has said, this isn't going to be a standard superhero film. Maybe Phoenix will be dropped into a Value-Added Tax of acid or something late in the film, but for the most part, it looks like we'll be examining a real human being, stripped of supervillainous accoutrements. The photos show Phoenix smiling, with long hair and before his character donned puts on the familiar white make-up and red lipstick. Fleck is shown honking the nose of a clown with a maniacal grin on his face while holding a bag. The studio is also developing a standalone Joker film that will operate within the DC Universe and star Leto.

In a recent interview, Joaquin Phoenix stated that the Joker will be a unique movie and noted that director Todd Phillips is very passionate about the project, which is part of the reason that he was attracted to the role. "And so I think that's what Todd sees appealing about this idea".
