Russian military jet vanishes from radar over Syria

Russia's Defence Ministry says it lost contact with the IL-20 aircraft near its Hmeimim Airbase in Syria.

The deal marked a significant agreement between the two leaders and effectively delays an offensive by Syria and its Russian and Iranian allies, one that Turkey fears would create a humanitarian crisis near its border.

Syrian media reported a missile attack on the coastal city of Latakia Monday evening.

Meanwhile, a USA official with knowledge of the incident claimed the Russian plane had been inadvertently shot down by the Syrian anti-aircraft artillery after the Syrians came under attack by Israeli missiles.

Syrian state media said earlier on Monday missiles were fired from the sea at several locations in the Syrian coastal city of Latakia, but were intercepted by air defenses.

"The connection with the crew of the Russian Il-20 aircraft was lost over the Mediterranean Sea when the plane was returning to the airbase of Khmeimim, 35 kilometers from the coast of Syria", a Russian Ministry of Defense official said, according to state-run media outlet TASS.

"At the same time Russian air control radar systems detected rocket launches from the French frigate Auvergne which was located in that region".

She said if anyone was going to tell her story, she wanted to be the one to tell it. "She was quite reluctant to come forward ". In The Washington Post interview , Mrs Ford said that when she tried to scream, Mr Kavanaugh put his hand over her mouth.

Head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP that "violent explosions were caused by missiles targeting ammunition depots in the technical industries institute".

It is unclear whether the Israeli military notified Russian Federation ahead of Monday night's attack in Latakia.

The Israel Defense Forces have not commented on the strikes, which appeared to involve F-16 fighters firing stand-off weapons, possibly from Lebanese airspace, into Latakia at a Syrian Organization for Technological Industries facility.

A second official confirmed that Israel was responsible for the missile strikes on the Syrian regime. It is unclear if its air defence batteries were also engaged in the defence, or if the aircraft was hit by "friendly fire" from nearby Syrian forces.

Israel is alleged to have been behind a series of airstrikes mainly targeting Iranian and Hezbollah forces in Syria that have joined the country's war fighting alongside the government.

When asked for comment about Monday's attack, an Israeli military spokeswoman said Israel did not comment on foreign reports.
