Gov. Cooper, President Trump meet in NC to assess Florence damage

Volunteers from all over North Carolina help rescue residents and their pets from their flooded homes during Hurricane Florence

Heavy rains and swelling rivers are still a...

Five days after Florence made landfall, more than a dozen rivers in the state have reached the stage of major flooding, with three more expected to peak in the next two days.

The Cape Fear River was also expected to keep rising in Fayetteville, a city of 200,000 in the southern part of the state near the Fort Bragg army base, according to the National Weather Service.

Images captured by Associated Press journalists show flooding caused by Florence in the Carolinas and Typhoon Mangkhut in the Philippines. Had it failed, it would have sent water downstream, flooding homes and businesses. The two officers with them were eventually rescued. The deaths are being investigated.

One journalist, freelancer Marcus DiPaola, put a spotlight on the issue after joining a local rescuer who waded through post-storm waters to help free six dogs who were locked in an outdoor cage where the water was "rapidly rising" in Leland, NC.

A Philippine police officer says residents of a mining camp in a mountain village refused to leave ahead of the powerful typhoon, believing their chapel and nearby bunkhouses were on stable ground. Almost 50,000 homes and businesses remain without power in the county where Wilmington is located.

Trump defends Supreme Court pick after sex assault allegation
Jeff Flake of Arizona, a Judiciary Committee member who has clashed bitterly with Trump and is retiring from the Senate. Democrats are calling for a full FBI investigation of the allegation before a hearing, saying Monday is too soon.

In South Carolina, workers with electricity provider Santee Cooper erected a temporary dike in hopes of preventing flooding of an old coal ash dump at the demolished Grainger Generating Station near Conway.

During major storms, uncovered lagoons can fill up with rain and overflow, or they can be flooded out by rising waters.

It's too early to tell how many people will end up homeless because of Florence. "It's been days since the storm". The utility later agreed to plead guilty to nine Clean Water Act violations and pay $102 million in fines and restitution for illegally discharging pollution from ash dumps at five North Carolina power plants.

"We continue to feel the effects of this massive storm", North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper said on Tuesday.

But some of the state's infrastructure is holding. The NBA, the Hornets and Fanatics will donate 100% of the net proceeds of the "Carolina Strong" T-shirt to the Foundation For The Carolinas' Hurricane Florence Response Fund.

Addressing roughly 10,000 people who remain in shelters and "countless more" staying elsewhere, Cooper urged residents to stay put for now, particularly those from the hardest-hit coastal counties that include Wilmington, near where Florence blew ashore on Friday.
