McDonald's Staff In 10 US Cities Protest Over Workplace Sexual Harassment

McDonald's workers walk out in 10 US cities over 'sexual harassment epidemic'

Sanford McDonald's employee Ashley Reddick said she has complained to managers, shifted hours and even cut hours to avoid rubbing, lewd comments and threatening behavior from a co-worker at her restaurant.

We must stand with the fearless McDonald's workers walking out today to demand the company address this epidemic of sexual harassment.

Attorneys for the workers plan to ask the EEOC to consolidate or coordinate the new charges with the 2016 charges as well as others that remain pending.

"We have strong policies, procedures and training in place specifically created to prevent sexual harassment", a spokesman said in a statement.

Carole is on strike today and she's reading the story of our undocumented sister who couldn't risk being public: "My supervisor tried to kiss me, I said no". Another woman from Gretna, Louisiana, said a co-worker would grab her hand and place it on his crotch, and would also grope her breasts and butt. "When they have tainted lettuce in 17 states, they don't say, 'Oh, this is only a problem for the franchisee.' They go to work trying to solve the problem across the system". They want McDonald's to form an anti-sexual harassment committee as well as enforce a zero-tolerance policy against sexual harassment.

Harrell was among several protest organizers who filed complaints with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in May, alleging pervasive harassment at some of McDonald's franchise restaurants.

Florence's Wrath Spreads To The Northeast With Heavy Rain
North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper reported 2,600 people have been rescued and evacuated, in addition to 300 animals in the state. President Trump will travel to North Carolina on Wednesday to survey the impact of Hurricane Florence.

However, when she reported the incident her "supervisors did nothing".

The organization Fight for $15, which formed to fight for fair wages in the restaurant industry, organized the nationwide protest after learning about repeated cases of harassment that female employees experienced over several years, organizers said.

Organizers said the strike is targeting McDonald's restaurants in Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Milwaukee, New Orleans, San Francisco and St. Louis, as well as Durham, North Carolina; Kansas City, Missouri; and Orlando, Florida. "I can't tell her to stand up for herself if I'm not willing to stand up for myself".

The Fight for $15, a national movement seeking to increase the minimum wage, has been pressurising the chain to increase wages and improve working conditions.

In a statement McDonald's said: "There is no place for harassment or discrimination of any kind at McDonald's". The goal of the strike is to confront sexual harassment allegations.

The company also said it had engaged prevention and response experts "to evolve our policies so everyone who works at McDonald's does so in a secure environment every day". For many women, the risks that come with filing a complaint are devastating, but they have been emboldened by the #MeToo Movement.
