"We're not mucking about" said Morrison, after at least 20 pieces of fruit were found to be contaminated with needles or pins.

Police in Australia have arrested a young boy who admitted to inserting needles into strawberries as part of an apparent prank.

A Queensland man posted this photo of a strawberry with a needle in it after reporting his friend swallowed one.

More than 100 people in Australia have reported finding needles and other shards of metal in strawberries and other fruit across the country, according to the Australian government.

Queensland Police said in two statements the alleged incident was not linked to the ongoing strawberry sabotage crisis that has seen fruit stripped off Queensland shelves.

Since then contaminated fruit has also been discovered in other states including New South Wales, Victoria, the Australian Capital Territory, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania.

Foodstuffs and Woolworths NZ confirmed that they would stop importing Australian strawberries to New Zealand as a precautionary measure to keep their customers safe.

Australian police said the contaminated fruit appeared to have originated at a Queensland-based supplier.

Annastacia Palaszczuk, premier of Queensland state, also offered a reward of roughly $72,000 for information leading to the arrest of anyone responsible.
