Trump heads to North Carolina to see Florence damage

An exchange Trump reportedly had on Wednesday during a visit to New Bern, North Carolina, is making the rounds on Twitter, with users accusing the president of being insensitive amid disaster relief efforts.

Trump started his tour of storm-ravaged communities on Wednesday in North Carolina.

Trump came face to face with one such boat - a yacht that had washed up against a house in its backyard.

President Trump, clearly, has an eye for luxury - even in the most unexpected circumstances.

More than 18 million litres of partially treated sewage spilled into the Cape Fear River after power went out at a treatment plant, officials said, and the earthen dam at a pond holding hog waste was breached, spilling its contents.

It turned out this was just the beginning of a hotly contested and roundlycriticized response that has continued to spark fresh debate, most recently when Trump again denied the widely accepted Maria-related death toll last week.

"I didn't see him down in North Carolina in the last few days helping out, lending a hand, but I'm sure he was busy doing something important besides just tweeting lies", Cooper said on his show Monday.

Conway's city spokesman Taylor Newell said water could be "4 feet higher" there than when Hurricane Matthew struck in 2016. He was criticized for his handling of Hurricane Maria, which devastated Puerto Rico past year, and more recently for disputing the official death toll of 3,000.

"Is everybody OK?" he asked those gathered, assuring them it was "going to be OK".

"Our state took a gut punch and our state is still reeling", North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper told Trump, calling the storm "epic, disastrous and widespread".

"A storm and responding to it the right way can make or break a political career", said Gary Lackmann, a professor of atmospheric science at North Carolina State University.

Association CEO Graham Boyd said about 40 per cent of the crop was still in the field when the storm hit.

Addressing roughly 10,000 people who remain in shelters and "countless more" staying elsewhere, Cooper urged them to stay put for now, particularly those from the hardest-hit coastal counties that include Wilmington, near where Florence blew ashore on Friday.

"Whatever we have to do at the federal level, we will be there", he said.

Charlotte Hornets President Fred Whitfield discusses how his organization and National Basketball Association legend Michael Jordan are helping victims affected by Hurricane Florence. "All of the folks from the federal government that are around the table are confirming it".

Governor Cooper thanked the president for coming. The enduring image of the trip was of Trump at a church lobbing paper towels into the crowd as if shooting baskets.

Sitting on the shores of Lake Norman is a Trump National Golf Club.

While most people were able to evacuate, that wasn't the case with livestock.

Before that, Trump's trip to Texas after Hurricane Harvey generated blowback for his failure to meet with victims of the storm. That's four times its normal height. Some critics said the president's trip took on the tone of a victory lap for successful disaster management.
