Alzheimer's rates will rise dramatically over the next 40 years

World Alzheimer's Day,Alzheimer's Month,Alzheimer's Disease

The number of people with Alzheimer's and related dementias will double by 2060, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in a report published Thursday, September 20, according to Fortune. In order for people who don't have Alzheimer's symptoms to participate in studies, they'll need to be tested for some of the telltale markers of susceptibility to the disease.

The paper first classifies predictions for Alzheimer's disease by race and ethnicity.

"Experts today focus on other areas of research, and few believe that everyday sources of aluminium pose any threat", says Alzheimer's Association.

World Alzheimer's Day, which is observed on September 21, is an worldwide campaign aimed at raising awareness and to challenge the common stigma that surrounds Alzheimer's.

As a result, the study projects minority populations will make up 45 percent of the Alzheimer's disease population in 2060, up from 22 percent in 2014. After looking at CT scans from 1,991 seniors, the team found that older age, diabetes and smoking were associated with an increased risk of hippocampal calcifications, with previous research also linking Alzheimer's disease to the breakdown of the hippocampus.

Alzheimer's is a progressive disease that impairs memory and other mental functions.

Most American adults are anxious they'll develop Alzheimer's, but they're also optimistic that there will be a cure for the disease in their lifetimes, according to survey results released Monday.

Over 3% of the population - almost 14 million Americans - may have Alzheimer's disease or related dementias by 2060, according to a new CDC report.

'It is now one of the leading causes of death and disability internationally, with an annual economic cost of more than U.S. $1 trillion. The researchers believe Hispanic Americans will have the largest increase due to their expected population growth in the coming decades.

Dementia is more prevalent in women, at 12.2 percent, than in men, at 8.6 percent.

Currently, among adults aged 65 and older, African-Americans have the highest prevalence of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, at 13.8 percent.

Although the survey showed a majority of people are anxious about getting dementia, it revealed people have faith in the dementia research happening today to bring about a cure. "Early diagnosis is key to helping people and their families cope with loss of memory, navigate the health care system, and plan for their care in the future", Redfield said.
