Brett Kavanaugh: Second allegation made against court nominee

Brett Kavanaugh

WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump's nominee for the Supreme Court, Brett Kavanaugh, told the Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday he will not withdraw his nominations because of "false and uncorroborated" sexual misconduct allegations against him.

In a New Yorker report from Ronan Farrow and Jane Mayer, Ramirez recounts an incident that she says occurred during the 1983-84 academic year, when both she and Kavanaugh were at Yale University.

President Donald Trump on Monday said he is sticking with Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, telling reporters "I am with him all the way". "I want her to have her voice", Trump said.

Trump made clear that he expects the Republican-controlled Senate to stick by Kavanaugh, who he said was being smeared by his Democratic opponents.

The New Yorker doesn't provide any quotations from Ramirez's initial uncertain remarks about Kavanaugh, but reports that she took "six days of carefully assessing her memories and consulting with her attorney" before detailing her 35-year-old allegation.

"I would think an FBI investigation would be warranted", she told The New Yorker.

"This is another serious, credible, and disturbing allegation against Brett Kavanaugh".

Ford and Kavanaugh are set to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday to address the allegations after a week of fraught public negotiations between Ford's attorneys and Senate Republicans.

One classmate who Ramirez said egged on Kavanaugh denied any memory of the party, according to the magazine. Ramirez asked that the FBI investigate her story saying, "At least look at it".

Senator Dianne Feinstein, the Judiciary panel's highest-ranking Democrat, said after the latest allegation that the confirmation process should be put on hold until the claims are fully vetted. Kavanaugh has denied that event as well, through a statement from The White House.

Earlier Sunday, Sen. Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said lawyers for Ford were contesting two GOP conditions - that Ford and Kavanaugh would be the only witnesses and that an independent counsel would ask the questions.

Lawyers for Ford said in a statement on Sunday that she has committed to testifying in an open hearing on Thursday about her allegation of sexual assault against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

However, one former classmate remembered hearing about the incident from another, and independently corroborated numerous details offered by Ms Ramirez.

Before President Trump's nominee can be approved for the vacant seat on the U.S. top court, he has to be approved by the 20-person Senate Judiciary Committee and then the whole Senate.

In a statement on Sunday evening, Chuck Grassley, the judiciary committee chair, said his office contacted Avenatti as soon as the lawyer announced he may have information relevant to sexual misconduct claims against Kavanaugh.

Ms Katz had called Mr Grassley's original deadline "arbitrary" and said its "sole objective is to bully Dr Ford and deprive her of the ability to make a considered decision that has life-altering implications for her and her family".

White House spokesperson Kerri Kupec said in a statement, "This 35-year-old, uncorroborated claim is the latest in a coordinated smear campaign by the Democrats created to tear down a good man".

Kavanaugh was nominated by President Trump in July to replace the vacancy left by Justice Anthony Kennedy, who retired.

Kavanaugh plans to turn over to the committee personal calendars from the summer of 1982.

Speaking at the United Nations in NY on Monday, Mr Trump said Brett Kavanaugh is "outstanding", adding: "I am with him all the way".
