Everson Griffen of Minnesota Vikings in hospital following hotel incident

Everson Griffen missed Sunday's Vikings game not with an injury but with cause for concern about his mental well-being

Minnesota Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen is reportedly being evaluated at a Minneapolis-area hospital after an incident last Saturday, via multiple reports, as more details emerge about what is clearly a troubled time for the veteran player.

In a separate incident report obtained by ESPN, the Minneapolis Police Department was called Saturday to Hotel Ivy because an individual was threatening to shoot someone if he wasn't allowed in his room. He said he was uncertain whether the team offered additional resources to Griffen beyond demanding an evaluation before he returns to the team facility.

Griffen, 30, was arrested twice after his rookie season, the first incident coming January 28, 2011, when he was arrested in Los Angeles on suspicion of public intoxication.

At a news conference Tuesday, Zimmer at first referred to Spielman's statement before saying that "the only thing I'm really concerned for Everson about isn't anything to do with football, it's about him getting better".

According to Minneapolis police spokesman John Elder, officers were called to the hotel on Saturday after a man threatened physical violence.

Fabinho Starts - Liverpool Team vs Chelsea Confirmed

Griffen has gone to the Pro Bowl three consecutive seasons.

Kokesh spoke with Vikings executive director of player development Les Pico, who said Griffen had been exhibiting paranoid behavior and irrational and rapid speech but did not believe he was at risk for harming himself or others. Griffen's wife later contacted police to inform them Griffen said he was at Vikings teammate Trae Waynes' home and was trying to break in.

Griffen was held out because of a knee injury Sunday when the Vikings lost to the Buffalo Bills, but he was in no condition to play after a scary series of incidents Saturday. Zimmer made it clear that Griffen is missed both on the field and in the locker room, but said there are more important things to be anxious about. "He's always been a really, really good model for us and obviously he's going through some tough times now". "We told him that he needed to go to a hospital and get checked out", an officer stated in his report.

Griffen then went to a nearby gas station, where he saw a man who works at an establishment he frequents.

"In speaking with one of the paramedics, they stated that a few deer ran across the road and while they were driving Griffen got up and jumped out of the ambulance because he was in fear that someone was going to shoot him", the incident report read. He recently signed a four-year, $58 million extension that included a $2 million signing bonus and a total of $34 million in guaranteed money.
