Laser breakthroughs win physics Nobel

The Nobel Prize in physics was awarded Tuesday

She became emotional when told she was only the third to have won the physics prize - the first being Marie Curie in 1903, while Maria Goeppert Mayer won in 1963.

The optical tweezers created by Ashkin can manipulate living cells like viruses and bacteria without damaging them.

Strickland says her first thought on hearing she'd won the physics prize was "it's insane".

Last year, U.S. astrophysicists Barry Barish, Kip Thorne and Rainer Weiss won the physics prize for the discovery of gravitational waves, predicted by Albert Einstein a century ago as part of his theory of general relativity.

"Obviously we need to celebrate woman physicists because we're out there". He was awarded one half of the prize.

Thomas has voiced his displeasure over his contract, which is in its final year and includes an $8.5 million salary. I don't know where it was aimed at. "It was kind of two guys understanding and compassionate for the other.

He started his work on manipulation of microparticles with laser light in the late 1960s which resulted in the invention of optical tweezers in 1986.

Friday: Nobel Peace Prize will be awarded.

Strickland and Mourou helped develop short and intense laser pulses that have broad industrial and medical applications, including laser eye surgery. Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, Physics, and Chemistry are conferred upon people who have excelled in the field of science.

On Monday, two immunologists, James Allison of the United States and Tasuku Honjo of Japan, won this year's Nobel Medicine Prize for research into how the body's natural defences can fight cancer.

Three laser researchers shared the Nobel Prize in Physics on Tuesday - including the first woman to win in more than half a century - for inventing technologies which have paved the way for advanced precision instruments used in industry and medicine.
