First Woman to Win the Nobel Prize in Physics After 55 Years

The Nobel Prize for physics was awarded Tuesday to three scientists. The prize for chemistry will be awarded Wednesday

Mourou had been Strickland's PhD supervisor and said he was thrilled at the win.

"It's something that sort of never happens at this level", he said in a video released by France's Polytechnique school, where he is professor.

Originally developed as a means to increase the power of radar in the 1960s, the technology was developed in its current form in the 1980s by Strickland and Mourou. He even suggested there could be no Nobel Literature Prize awarded in 2019 either - which is counter to the academy's current plan to award both the 2018 and the 2019 literature Nobels next year.

Macron tweeted on Tuesday "we are proud of Gerard Mourou", the 74-year-old co-winner with Arthur Ashkin of the United States and Canada's Donna Strickland.

Many thought the Nobel committee had sidestepped Ashkin when a laser technique won the physics Nobel in 1997.

"Advanced precision instruments are opening up unexplored areas of research and a multitude of industrial and medical applications", the statement added.

"I hope more female scientists to win Noble science prizes in future". He immediately began studying biological systems and optical tweezers are now widely used to investigate the machinery of life.

Atlas Obscura, an online database of "the world's most wondrous places and foods" was the first to point out on Tuesday - the same day that Strickland was named a victor - that Goeppert-Mayer was referred to in news coverage as a "San Diego Mother".

Strickland was awarded the 2018 prize jointly with French scientist Dr. Gerard Mourou and American physicist Dr. Arthur Ashkin for their work on laser physics.

Jeff Flake was 'troubled' by Kavanaugh's 'tone' at sexual assault allegations hearing
Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh was accused of throwing ice at a man during an altercation at a bar while in college. She said he pinned her to a bed, attempted to forcibly remove her clothes and prevented her from screaming.

Ashkin, who is the oldest Nobel laureate ever at 96, spent little time with the media this morning. The economics victor in 2012, Lloyd Shapley, was 89.

Last year's prize was awarded to the trio of Rainer Weiss, Barry Barish and Kip Thorne for their work which led to the detection of gravitational waves: ripples in the fabric of spacetime, produced during violent events, such as the merger of black holes.

The three winners will share the 9 million krona prize.

Marie Curie was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903 for her discovery of radiation, and the first woman to win twice after receiving the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1911. "We did seem to be on the cutting edge of laser science, and I think we were all aware of that", she says.

That work resulted in Strickland's first published scientific paper in 1985, and she went on to base her doctoral dissertation on it.

"Obviously we need to celebrate women physicists because we are out there and hopefully in time it will start to move forward at a faster rate", she told a news conference by telephone, shortly after learning of the prize she won.

The announcement that a woman had been awarded the prize for physics comes a day after Italian scientist Prof Alessandro Strumia was suspended by Cern, the European organisation for nuclear research, for saying that "physics was invented and built by men".

Prosecutors had called for a minimum sentence of three years in what was one of the first big trials to come out of the #MeToo movement.

Dr Strickland, along with Arthur Ashkin, from the U.S. and Gérard Mourou, from France, were awarded the prize on Tuesday "for groundbreaking inventions in the field of laser physics".
