Melania Trump criticised for wearing 'colonialist' pith helmet on Kenyan safari

While in Kenya, Melania is expected to hold a meeting with President Uhuru and First Lady Margaret Kenyatta, visit the Kenya National Theatre as well as a few children homes within Nairobi.

On the previous leg of her tour in Kenya, her choice of a white colonial-style pith helmet while on safari drew some criticism on Twitter, with one person comparing her look to that of a "colonial administrator".

Trump then made a brief stop at the heavily-fortified US Embassy in downtown Cairo, driving through streets almost deserted due to a national holiday marking the 45th anniversary of Egypt's 1973 war with Israel.

In June, the first lady was photographed wearing a jacket emblazoned with the words "I really don't care, do u?" on its back.

"When people think of Africa, they have these standard narratives", Dionne said.

But it was her attire which drew concern on Twitter, as she donned a white pith hat, with her riding pants and boots.
