ISIS survivor Nadia Murad awarded Nobel Peace Prize

Peace Prize

Dr Mukwege is a gynaecologist, who with his team has treated tens of thousands of rape victims.

"The world refuses to remain idle with arms crossed facing your suffering". "The first thing they did was force us to convert to Islam". He has consistently condemned impunity for gang rape and "criticized the Congolese government and other countries for not doing enough to stop the use of sexual violence against women and as a weapon of war". He recalled that his youngest patient was an 18-month girl who was raped and had her genitals mutilated, and the oldest was a woman over 80 years old who was also raped.

After the award was announced, Murad's brother told Norwegian public broadcaster NRK, "She's crying right now". "The hope of ISIS was to break the Yazidi community", she says.

In 2009, while speaking to CNN Mukwege described how vital it was for women brutalized in the course of the DRC's long-running conflict to find support and recognition.

Murad recalled that ISIS first targeted Shi'ites in northern Iraq in June 2014 before it targeted Yazidis. Armed men tried to kill him in 2012, forcing him to temporarily leave the country.

She has said that IS fighters wanted "to take our honour, but they lost their honour" and has dedicated herself to what she calls "our peoples" fight'. "Dr. Mukwege brings smiles and helps fix women from the barbaric acts of men in Congo", she said.

Over the years, he has performed countless lifesaving operations at his Panzi hospital in Bukavu, and their plight made him speak out against these atrocities.

"The importance of Dr. Mukwege's enduring, dedicated and selfless efforts in this field can not be overstated".

She will share the prize with Denis Mukwege for their activism and work "to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict".

The Yazidis are an ancient religious minority, falsely branded as devil-worshippers by Sunni Muslim extremists. While a captive of the IS, Nadia Murad was repeatedly subjected to rape and other abuses.

"I can see in the face of many women how they are happy to be recognised and this is really so touching".
