Microsoft reveals Project xCloud service to stream Xbox games to phones

Microsoft unveils Xbox Project xCloud game streaming

Microsoft's xCloud will also face competition from other popular streaming services including Nvidia's GeForce Now and Sony's PlayStation Now among others.

"Today, the games you play are very much dictated by the device you are using", writes Kareem Choudry - Corporate Vice President, Gaming Cloud, at Microsoft.

Microsoft has just announced a new streaming service that aims to let you play big-name games on whatever device you want, whenever you want. The company's Xbox One console is among the most popular in the category and it has a prolific in-house game studio with several big titles under its belt.

Microsoft has finally revealed more details about its game streaming technology, which the company has been drumming up for a while now.

More importantly in the context of Project xCloud, Microsoft operates one of the world's largest infrastructure-as-a-service platforms. The test now runs at 10 megabits per second; Project xCloud can push the limits of 4G technology while being fully scalable for the upcoming 5G technology.

We are testing Project xCloud today.

"To realize this vision, we know we must make it easy for developers to bring their content to Project xCloud".

According to a press release from Microsoft sent out today, in 2019 the company plans to start testing Project xCloud, a streaming service where PC and console games, run on Microsoft hardware, can be streamed for play on a wide range of internet-enabled devices. Project xCloud will have the capability to make game streaming possible on 4G networks and will dynamically scale to push against the outer limits of what's possible on 5G networks as they roll out globally. And, if you're thinking about trying to fit all those controller buttons on a phone screen, Microsoft claims to be developing "a new, game-specific touch input overlay that provides maximum response in a minimal footprint for players who choose to play without a controller".

Latency is obviously a big deal too, and while Microsoft didn't really delve into the specifics of how it will solve that problem, it did say that its tests are now running at 10 Mbps, with the possibility of far greater speeds and lower latency once 5G begins rolling out on a large scale.
