Mourinho faces touchline ban as FA launch investigation into comments

Gary Neville launches blistering attack on Manchester United

Cape Town - Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is under investigation for comments he made to a TV camera after United's 3-2 win over Newcastle at Old Trafford on Saturday.

It was claimed Mourinho would be dismissed as United boss irrespective of his team's result at home to Newcastle United on Saturday evening.

If the club do decide to make a move, it places the futures of Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelöf - the Portuguese's other two central defensive signings while at Old Trafford - in further doubt.

Rooney was speaking after leading his new Major League Soccer side DC United to a ninth victory in 15 games.

"The ones that read the papers, that are connected with social media, they thought maybe I had gone [been sacked]", said Mourinho on talkSPORT.

Meanwhile, United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is "loathe to axe Mourinho" because it would mean a third sacking at the club since Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, and of course there's also the question of money.

The second half saw the French midfielder play one of his best matches of the season, before Alexis Sanchez claimed a dramatic late victor.

Paul Pogba remains the biggest concern, with United's record £89million record signing desperate to leave the club and join Barcelona as early as January despite being told he is not for sale. "At times when I played there, you would do a lap of honour if you got a corner!"

The man most commonly linked with replacing Mourinho at United is former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane.

Looking back on the two Champions League final defeats against Barcelona in 2009 and 2011, Rooney said that he believed that he was up against the greatest player of all time in Lionel Messi.
