Wozniacki wins 30th title with China Open victory

Caroline Wozniacki

Naomi Osaka of Japan hits a return shot while competing against Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia in their women's singles semifinal match in the China Open at the National Tennis Center in Beijing, Saturday, Oct. 6, 2018.

As it has been the case in her previous matches here in Beijing, Osaka had to overcome some shaky serving out of the gate, with a double fault in her first service game helping her opponent drag her to break point.

Awaiting her in the final is another Grand Slam champion - second seed Caroline Wozniacki, who looked in total control as she defeated home favourite Wang Qiang 6-1, 6-3 in just one hour and 24 minutes.

Wozniacki claimed her first China Open title in 2010 when she jumped to top the WTA rankings for the first time.

The 20-year-old Japanese fought back tears and rescued a match that was slipping away from her to defeat the unseeded local, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 in a match that saw a lot of topsy turvy moments. "Naomi, she's a great player, one of the best this year".

New Climate Change Report Sounds Global Alarm ー Is Anyone Listening?
Plants, insects, animals, and marine life will all be pushed farther out of current geographic ranges with 2 degrees of warming. The report warns India to prepare for annual heat wave conditions and singles out Kolkata for special mention on this count.

The Argentine top seed Del Potro will face either Britain's fifth seed Kyle Edmund or unseeded Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia.

"Then if you win one Grand Slam, they're like, 'Oh, she only won one Grand Slam.' I know it's bad, but I sort of read the comments. The physios did a good job and somehow I'm still hanging in there, serving OK", world number 20 Sevastova said.

If she wins against Wozniacki, Sevastova will rise to world number 11 but only to world number 12 if she loses.

"I'm kind of happy that I was able to get this far".

Wozniacki, whose form has been patchy in the second half of the year, was ruthless on her serve and wrapped up the first set with an overhead smash to underline her superiority.
