Google to shut down Google

Its analysis reveals that the profiles of up to 500,000 Google+ accounts were potentially affected, though it has no evidence of developer abuse.

Google will retire its Google+ social network after it admitted to finding flaws that may have exposed private data from up to half a million accounts. Others include limiting what sorts of data that can be collected per transaction when users share their Gmail accounts and phone numbers.

Google's own social network, Google+, will shut down after a vulnerability exposed the personal information of over 500,000 users, according to CNET.

Google+ was introduced in 2011 as the tech giant's response to the rising social network phenomenon and as a rival to Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks.

The Wall Street Journal, reported that they have reviewed a memo prepared by Google's legal and policy staff, which indicated that disclosing the data breach could lead to scrutiny by government regulatory agencies.

Turkey investigates claims that Saudis killed journalist
Hunt said he was seeking urgent answers about the fate of Khashoggi, one of the highest-profile critics of the Saudi leadership. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo acknowledged the conflicting reports about the safety and whereabouts of Khashoggi.

According to WSJ sources, Google CEO Sundar Pichai was briefed on the plan only after the decision not to inform the public was made - riiiiight. Google claims it didn't report the incident right away as it didn't find any evidence of misuse of the profile data by any of the app developers.

The firm has also promised to institute new security rules, including limits around the types of use cases that are permitted to access consumer Gmail data. The company announced today that it's killing the consumer version of Google+ after it discovered some major privacy issues with the official Google+ APIs. The glitch was live for almost three years, according to the reports, but Google decided not to make the breach public because it feared regulation.

Many people probably aren't aware if they even have a Google+ account - here's how to check. "We chose to sunset the consumer version of Google+", the company said in the post.

It also comes just weeks after a separate report in The Wall Street Journal detailed how the developers of some third-party apps are able to read users' email. Contact interaction data will no longer be available via the Android Contacts API either.

A Google spokesperson cited "significant challenges in creating and maintaining a successful Google+ that meets consumers" expectations" along with "very low usage' as the reasons for killing off the service.
