Turkey investigates claims that Saudis killed journalist

Turkey believes journalist killed in Saudi consulate

Democratic Senator Chris Murphy, who has previously called for the USA to end support for Saudi Arabia over its war in Yemen, also expressed outrage over Khashoggi's disappearance and possible murder. The Post, which first published the photo, said "a person close to the investigation" shared the image with it, without elaborating. "It is going to put further stress on the relationship, particularly in terms of congressional views on Saudi Arabia", said Gerald Feierstein, a veteran U.S. diplomat in the Middle East who served as ambassador to Yemen.

A Turkish police source told the Middle East Eye that officials believe Khashoggi was "brutally tortured, killed and cut into pieces" while inside the consulate.

Mr Khashoggi, a Saudi national, went missing after visiting the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Tuesday.

"We call on the government of Saudi Arabia to support a thorough investigation of Mr. Khashoggi's disappearance and to be transparent about the results of that investigation", he said.

Turkish authorities say they believe he was killed within the consulate and have requested access - but the Saudis say the allegations are baseless.

He also alleged the Saudi government had pressured the publisher of Arabic daily newspaper Al-Hayat to cancel his column and said he was told to stop tweeting to his 1.8 million followers after he cautioned against the country's "overly enthusiastic embrace" of then US President-elect Donald Trump in late 2016.

Private broadcaster NTV reported on October 9 that all suspects were seen entering the consulate half an hour before Khashoggi and leaving it after nearly three hours. The longer the crisis continues, the more biased Al-Jazeera gets, he said.

In his opinion articles, Khashoggi has been critical of some policies of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Riyadh's intervention in the war in Yemen.

In March, the Senate narrowly failed in a bid to restrict United States support for Saudi Arabia's campaign in Yemen over rights concerns.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo acknowledged the conflicting reports about the safety and whereabouts of Khashoggi.

Tuesday's statement from the Turkish foreign ministry's spokesman, Hami Aksoy, said Saudi authorities have notified Ankara that they were "open to cooperation" and would allow the consulate building to be searched.

We have no problem with a plot that came off fairly basic, but it suffered from also being a bit uninteresting and a bit confused. But five minutes in, I was just watching it as a fan again, and I'd forgotten that I knew them, and that they were my mates.

Who is Jamal Khashoggi?

Khashoggi had entered the consulate to get documents for his forthcoming marriage.

In July, the United Nations human rights office called on Saudi Arabia to release all peaceful activists, including women held for campaigning against a ban on driving as it was being lifted.

The former government adviser, who turns 60 on October 13, has lived in the United States since previous year to avoid possible arrest.

Meanwhile, Turkish authorities are scouring motorway camera footage in the hopes of finding a black van they suspect carried Khashoggi's body out of the consulate.

The case would not go unsolved, Aktay said.

"Hopefully that will sort itself out", he added.

The two countries have such an obligation under both criminal law and worldwide human rights law, she said. Among other things, as MBS told Bloomberg, the visit prompted Riyadh to commit to buying more than 60 percent of its weapons in the next decade from Washington. "I said nothing. I didn't want to lose my job or my freedom".

Hunt said he was seeking urgent answers about the fate of Khashoggi, one of the highest-profile critics of the Saudi leadership.

The alleged murder, cloaked in deep mystery, assumes more global significance because Khashoggi was a high-profile journalist with penetrating worldwide connections.

Self-exiled Saudi dissident Jamal Khashoggi said earlier this year that the Saudi government has been moving toward nationalist radicalism.
