NASA astronaut, Russian cosmonaut make emergency landing after Soyuz rocket failure

NASA astronaut Hague and Roscosmos' cosmnonaut Ovchinin lifted off as scheduled at 4:40 a.m. EDT Thursday from the Russia-leased Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

A capsule carrying the crew of a Russian Soyuz rocket that malfunctioned on lift-off has landed safely in Kazakhstan, Russian media report.

The Soyuz MS-10 launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 1:40 a.m. PT, but an issue with the booster forced NASA's Nick Hague and Russia's Aleksey Ovchinin to return to earth.

They are set to make an emergency landing in Kazakhstan, with both crew members live and talking to mission control.

At a White House ceremony on Monday night, Kavanaugh said he was starting his new job without bitterness. McConnell told The Associated Press on Wednesday the gender gap "clearly is wider than it used to be".

The US space agency Nasa said there was an "issue with the booster".

Search and rescue teams were heading to the area to recover the crew. A Reuters reporter who observed the launch from around 1 km away said it had gone smoothly in its initial stages and that the failure of the booster rockets must have occurred at higher altitude.

In 2015, he was selected to participate in a space food taste test, sampling some 160 dishes designed for astronauts and cosmonauts on board the International Space Station. Hague and Ovchinin will spend about six months living and working aboard the orbiting lab.
