Bloomberg Rejoins Democrats, Signals Interest in Presidential Bid

Michael Bloomberg announced that he has registered as a Democrat, fueling speculation that he will challenge Republican President Donald Trump in the 2020 election.

Michael Bloomberg is back - in the Democratic Party, that is. Today, he released a picture of himself filling out his registration form and warning about threats to the Constitution that require checks and balances.

"At key points in USA history, one of the two parties has served as a bulwark against those who threaten our Constitution".

Last month Bloomberg told the New York Times that, if he were to run for president, he would "have to run as a Democrat". This isn't his first rodeo, either, as he considered running as an Independent both in 2008 and 2016.

The idea now, of course, is that Bloomberg will run for president in 2020, and that he'll do so as a Democrat.

The deadline to register to vote in New York State is Friday.

He has said he will "take a look" at a presidential campaign after the midterm elections, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.

He took an indirect swipe at President Donald Trump and his Republican allies, who Bloomberg suggested posed a threat to US democratic institutions.

That's the party he belonged to most of his life before switching to the Republican party to run for mayor.

"It's impossible to conceive that I could run as a Republican - things like choice, so numerous issues, I'm just way away from where the Republican Party is today", Bloomberg said last month. But in June, he announced that he'd support Democrats in the November elections, accusing Republicans of doing "little to reach across the aisle to craft bipartisan solutions".

The 76-year-old billionaire has switched political parties several times in the last couple decades.
