Hurricane Michael Death Toll Climbs to 16

Wait 1 second to continue.

In the wake of Hurricane Michael, many journalists in the Florida panhandle are living through the same nightmare as other local residents, and working in incredibly hard conditions.

Beyond Florida, five storm-related deaths were reported in Virginia - including that of a fireman whose firetruck was struck by a semitrailer truck. No tropical cyclone warnings or watches were in effect in the United States.

The rapid-moving rainfall from Michael triggered flash floods in parts of Virginia and the Carolinas, including areas threatened by swollen rivers during Hurricane Florence.

In North Carolina, a 38-year-old man died when a large tree fell on his vehicle Thursday on U.S. 64 east of Statesville, Iredell County Fire Marshal David Souther said. At least 17 people have been killed.

"We're doing good", Bateman said, despite damage to the church's roof. In southwest Georgia, a girl was killed in her home as the storm swept through the region.

The death toll rose to 18 in four states as of Saturday evening, and thousands more remain unaccounted for. The agency declined to provide additional details on the death beyond saying it occurred in Wayne County.

The number of dead was expected to rise, but authorities scrapped plans to set up a temporary morgue, indicating they had yet to see signs of mass casualties from the most powerful hurricane to hit the continental USA in almost 50 years.

So far, a total of eight have died in Florida, five in Virginia, three in North Carolina, and one in Georgia.

Hurricane Michael tears Florida towns apart, six dead
Leslie, strengthened from a tropical storm to a Category 1 hurricane this week, has maximum sustained winds of 75 miles per hour . The storm, one of the most powerful to ever hit the country, is now heading for Spain.

Despite the fact that Hurricane Michael-one the most powerful hurricanes in U.S. history, weakened as it moved over the southeastern United States, authorities expect an increase in the death toll.

Hurricane Michael wreaks havoc on the coastal town of Mexico Beach, Florida.

Search teams continued to pick their way through the ruins of Mexico Beach, the ground-zero town of about 1,000 people that was almost wiped off the map when Michael blew ashore there on Wednesday with devastating 155 miles per hour winds. Almost 2,000 law enforcement officials have been sent into the Panhandle. Rescuers found the body of the man overnight and the woman is still missing. A sheriff's deputy and a local resident tried to rescue James E. King Jr., state police said, but the floodwaters were too deep and too swift. "So our neighbors, if they've ever wondered if we love them, they're about to find out for sure when they see one of these dream team t-shirts on".

People who chose to evacuate were stuck in shelters.

Florida Senator Bill Nelson said that this storm left "the worst destruction that the Panhandle has seen for however long that I've been living".

The front door of Bay Medical Sacred Heart in Panama City was boarded up Friday and water service hadn't been restored but a handmade sign directed patients to the emergency room, which remains operational.

Relatives of people who defied evacuation orders in Mexico Beach, a town where the storm obliterated shorefront neighborhoods, also posted messages on the Facebook pages of law enforcement pleading for help finding relatives.

"Very few people live to tell what it's like to experience storm surge", he said.

Florida insurers "are built to be able to withstand these types of storms that are expected to happen every 10 to 15 years", according to Brian C. Schneider, a senior director at the analytics firm Fitch Ratings.
