Cologne police: Hostage incident at train station

Cologne train station hostage situation in Germany today - Live updates

A woman has probably been taken hostage in the western German city of Cologne, police said on Monday, urging people to stay away from the area around the city's main train station.

The hostage situation began at 12.45pm and police closed the railway station and Breslauer Platz square behind the station.

The woman was treated at the scene for "light" injuries, police said.

Local media reported shots being fired inside the station, something which a police spokesperson later denied. The suspect was "seriously injured", however it's unclear if he was in police custody.

"We are in contact with the man", police spokesman Christoph Gilles told broadcaster n-tv at the time.

"We need to find out what he wants, what his demands are and whether he carries a weapon", he said, adding that police were not aware of the man's motive.

It is not yet clear why the man took the woman hostage.

Heavily armed police now surround the station, which has been evacuated and closed off to the public.

German railroad operator Deutsche Bahn tweeted that some of the station's tracks were shut down temporarily.
