Former Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya responds to ICC corruption charges

Jayasuriya has played close to 600 international matches

Ex-Sri Lanka captain Sanath Jayasuriya has been charged by the International Cricket Council with two breaches of its anti-corruption code.

He was accused by the ICC over failure to cooperate with an investigation carried out by the apex body's Anti-Corruption Unit and tampering with or destroying information relevant to the investigation.

Last year, the Jayasuriya-led selection panel resigned en masse following protests over Sri Lanka's slump in form.

Jayasuriya, through the release, also said "not in any position to release any comments at this moment" as he has to submit his response to the ACU within 14 days.

"The ICC will not make any further comment in respect of these charges at this stage", the statement added.

After signing off from global cricket, Jayasuriya also tried his hands at politics and in 2010 became an elected member of the Sri Lankan parliament, a stint which ended in 2015.

Endeavor Considers Withdrawing From Saudi Arabia Deal
Mr Trump said to reporters at the White House: "The king firmly denied any knowledge of it". He told CBS: "We're going to get to the bottom of it".

"However, I am under advise to state that the above charges do not contain any allegations pertaining to match fixing, pitch fixing or any other similar corrupt activity", he said.

After signing off from worldwide cricket, Jayasuriya also tried his hands at politics and in 2010 became an elected member of the Sri Lankan parliament, a stint which ended in 2015.

While Hussain lamented the fact that worldwide cricket was brought into disrepute once again, he praised the ICC for its swift decision to charge Jayasuriya.

The ICC has, reportedly, been carrying on "direct and indirect investigations along with Sri Lanka Cricket's ACU".

He is Sri Lanka's third-most prolific Test batsman with 6,973 runs, and only three players - Sachin Tendulkar, Kumar Sangakkara and Ricky Ponting - have scored more than his tally of 13,430 runs in ODIs.

The ACU had recently visited Sri Lanka and had briefed President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Sports Minister Faiszer Mustapha about their ongoing investigations into serious allegations of corruption in cricket in the country. In 2011, former Lankan skipper Hashan Tillakaratne had, in a meeting with then Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, alleged that Jayasuriya and his former national teammate Aravinda De Silva and current SLC president Thilanga Sumathipala were involved in fixing of global matches.
