It is thought the 22-year-old gunman, who was with a part of local hunters opened fire after mistaking the cyclist for a moving animal.

Mr Sutton was originally from Wales and owned a local health food restaurant called Wild Beets Kitchen in ski resort Les Gets with his partner Jo.

According to the BBC, more than 20 people have died in hunting accidents in France in the past three years.

The restaurant owner had been settled in Les Gens for "a number of years", and had many family and friends in the United Kingdom too, said the sources.

Mr Sutton's friends are organising a bike ride in his memory under the banner #rideformarc, tying in with #rideforellie, which was taking place to commemorate Ellie Soutter, the British Olympic snowboarder who died on her 18th birthday.
